From Patient to Changemaker: Dr Doriane Sabushimike’s Journey

In this video, we spoke to Dr Doriane Sabushimike, a graduate of the Regional Dermatology Training Centre (RDTC) in Tanzania and now a Dermatovenereologist at Kamenge Military Hospital in Bujumbura, Burundi. Filmed at the RDTC during her final weeks in Moshi in January 2024, Dr Sabushimike reflects on her journey - from experiencing chronic eczema as a child in Burundi, to training in dermatology at the RDTC, and now returning home to expand access to care through community outreach. With support from the International Foundation for Dermatology (IFD), the GLODERM Mentorship Programme, and a DermLink grant from the ILDS, she recently ran her first outreach clinic in Burundi and is working to build a long-term dermatology service, with hopes of establishing a future training centre. Her story is a powerful example of how RDTC graduates are leading change across the region, supported by global partnerships and local determination.
