Miina Mäki, Senior Specialist in Marine Protection at the John Nurminen Foundation, argues that the Baltic Sea is an ideal test-bed for research and development due to its significant potential for cross-border cooperation, which fosters innovation in new goods and services derived from biological resources. For example, the Finnish startup Origin by Ocean is conducting a pilot project to harvest blue-green algae from the Baltic Sea, where excessive algae blooms affect up to 97% of the water's surface. The collected algae will be used in a bio-refining process to produce sustainable, bio-based chemicals designed to replace traditional oil-based ingredients in consumer products such as sunscreen. At Kiilto, we intend to use Origin by Ocean's bio-based raw materials in our product development for hygiene and cleaning products.
