Build-up play has evolved. The game has changed. But many of the training exercises we still see used in build-up sessions haven’t. In this Modern Soccer Coach breakdown, I take you inside how I would design a build-up session at the elite level and highlight the common mistakes coaches continue to make when training this phase of the game. Too often, exercises lack realism, lack pressure, and fail to connect individual actions to collective team principles. If the objective is to prepare players for the demands of the modern game, then our session design must reflect that. We’ll look at why certain build-up practices are no longer relevant, what elite players actually need from minute one of the session, and how to connect your warm-up, positional games, and larger tactical moments so everything aligns with your team’s principles. This is not about adding more complexity. It’s about designing smarter. #SoccerCoaching #FootballCoaching #BuildUpPlay #SessionDesign #ModernSoccerCoach #EliteCoaching #TacticalTraining #FootballTactics #CoachingEducation #SoccerSession #TrainingDesign #PositionalPlay #garycurneen #modernsoccercoach #freedrills #GameModel #CoachingPhilosophy #CoachDevelopment #SoccerAnalysis #FootballAnalysis #HighPerformanceCoaching #PlayerDevelopment #EliteTraining #SoccerCoachLife #AcademyCoaching #PressResistance #BuildUpPatterns #TacticalPrinciples #CoachingTheGame #FootballDevelopment #SoccerTactics #11v11 #ModernGame
