According to Ella Kyle, a gardener at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, perennial hibiscus is surprisingly hardy enough to thrive in the upper Midwest. Despite their lush, tropical appearance that often shocks northern gardeners, these plants are rated for Zone 4 cold hardiness. Kyle emphasizes that while they look exotic, they are fully capable of surviving a harsh Minnesota winter if given the right environment to establish themselves as a focal point in the garden. To ensure survival through a long winter, Kyle recommends applying roughly four inches of straw mulch around the root zone to provide an insulating blanket against extreme temperature fluctuations. Gardeners should exercise patience in the spring, as the hibiscus is notoriously slow to emerge and may not sprout as early as other perennials. Once it does return, its massive blooms act as a vibrant "accent piece" for the landscape, much like a bold piece of jewelry or a colorful accessory. Prairie Yard & Garden airs weekly on Pioneer PBS at 7:30 p.m. CST on Thursday evenings and subsequent episodes of PY&G rebroadcast Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Mondays at 1 p.m. following the initial air date on Pioneer PBS. In addition to station broadcasts, viewers in Pioneer PBS’s viewing area can also stream the premiere live at pioneer.org/live, on YouTube TV, Prime Video, Hulu Live, or via the “Live TV” button on the PBS app and pbs.org. Full episodes can also be streamed at pioneer.org/pyg, the PBS app, the Prairie Yard & Garden YouTube channel and pbs.org/show/prairie-yard-garden. First aired in 1987, Prairie Yard & Garden (PY&G) is a Midwest gardening program produced by Pioneer PBS. Each season, the crew travels the state to meet with researchers, gardening and nursery professionals, educators and ordinary backyard gardeners to discuss specific issues in horticulture, landscaping and a host of topics in gardening. The show has been hosted by Mary Holm for 12 seasons. Mike Cihak also returns for his 31st season producing and editing the show. Production assistants Gorden McIntosh and Vivian Heltemes provide additional videography. PY&G is sponsored by Shalom Hill Farm, Heartland Motor Company, North Dakota State University, Friends of Prairie Yard & Garden and members of Pioneer PBS.
