I compare a 5E3 Mojotone kit build to two other amps - a Fender Blues Deluxe RI 2016, and a Marshall DSL40c - both are tube amps and rated at a higher output that the 5E3. They have pcbs in them. I had also installed a Fromel kit in the Deluxe RI and a treble mod in the DSL40c. My findings? There is something about the 5E3 that sings - great harmonics and musicality. The bigger amps feel like heavy hitters when you plug in - like, you know you could crank them and lift the roof off if you wanted to. But I was after tone with the 5E3, and that's what I got. The 5E3 breaks up quite early, so after this video was posted, I changed the preamp coupling caps (.1uF to .05uF) and cascaded the preamp stages internally. I made the V1 cathode bypass cap switchable and added a switchable Global Negative Feedback. Shazam. Much more control over the amp.
