George Stevens chose Alfred Newman, who, upon being hired, declared that the story had deeply moved him. To acclimate himself, he traveled to Holland and found himself in the Franks' very bedroom. He said : « It was a strange experience... I felt a mixture of elation and revulsion ». Newman explained that Stevens had asked him not to dwell on the sadness, but to create an intimate soundscape focused on love and humor. However, Newman went further, realizing that he was particularly moved by the spirituality of the story. He said : « I did not seek to illustrate, except in places, what was happening on screen, but rather to evoke in the music the memory of a happier time and aspirations for the future—the aspirations of an oppressed people. »
