Hii, debojyoti here, presenting you another british era building, the video on robert clive's house got an overwhelming response prompting me to make another video on viceroy governor general series. Canning is a town in south 24 parganas west bengal, situated on the banks of MATLA river, the same river that flows through the sundarbans, so canning can be considered as the gateway to sunderbans. The name of the town came from the last governor general of english east India company and the first viceroy of India, the 1st earl of canning. he ruled during the revolt of 1857 also known as the 1st war of independance. he died just a few months after his viceroyship during this time he constructed this house originnally for the purpose of a port but due to siltation in matla river the project was abandoned and coverted into an administrative office and is now in a bad shape. this house is made of bricks and the famous Indian mortar that is the lime terracotta mortar. The structure has a basement, and two storeys, while the basement and the 1st floor are not accessible the ground floor is occupied by an old lady, whose husband had bought the house, the old lady wants to give this historical building to the ASI or state monuments department. the condition of the house is quite bad and need urgent attention as the cyclone amphan caused significant damage to the building. if you like my work please subcribe to this channel as I keep on uploading videos related to travel, history, bikes, and mostly i try to bring out the unknown.
