The most lethal police operation in the history of Rio de Janeiro has left at least 64 people dead after more than 2,500 police officers stormed two organised crime strongholds near the city’s international airport. Police said they were seeking to serve arrest warrants against leading members of the Red Command drug trafficking gang in the city. Before dawn, they entered two communities where the gangs were known to operate. Criminals inside immediately fought back, launching hundreds of rounds of sustained gunfire, barricading roads and dropping grenades from adapted recreational drones. Ninety-three rifles and half a tonne of drugs were seized in the operation, police said. In the aftermath, plumes of black smoke billowed across the beachfront city, which is Brazil’s most popular international tourist destination.
