What’s it REALLY Like in NORTH MACEDONIA? Exploring PRILEP 🇲🇰

Searching for the real North Macedonia in the city of Prilep - a place famous for its tobacco industry, a ruined 15th century Mosque & the spectacular Treskavec Monastery on a hill overlooking the city. 🇲🇰 See more travel vlogs from NORTH MACEDONIA → https://bit.ly/mwt_northmacedonia Leaving Skopje I wanted to visit a few places that tourists don’t tend to get to - first on the list is the city of Prilep (Прилеп). I spent the morning on a self guided walking tour exploring some of the city’s more unusual landmarks. Starting in the City Park Metodija Andonov Cento (Градски Парк Методија Андонов Ченто) I found an Alexander the Great statue (Споменик „Александар ||| Македонски - Прилеп), the Ottoman-era ruins of Kursumli Hans where just a wall remains, and the centrepiece monument of King Marko in the city square. Just across the street is the Old Bazaar and various market stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as a sideline of branded clothes and footwear. Amongst the traders I found the striking Prilep Clocktower dating back to 1826. I then stumbled into the ruins of the Carsi Mosque which is free to visit and open for all to walk around. The Mosque was built in 1475 but burned down in civil unrest back in 2001. On my way into the city I had stopped to admire a private tobacco farm located in a stall at the front of a house. It wasn’t unusual as they’re everywhere but as I was looking the homeowner called me into his courtyard for a closer inspection. He showed me more tobacco growing in his back garden and gave me a fresh tobacco leaf as a gift to take away. Finally I returned to my hotel, picked up the rental car and made the short but scenic drive up to the 12th century Treskavec Monastery set on top of Zlato mountain. It is dedicated to the Holy Mother of God but sadly suffered a fire in 2013 which destroyed some of the old wooden buildings. Thankfully most of the church and many of the colourful frescoes inside survived and are open for public viewing whenever the monk is around - which luckily he was when I visited. Stunning views surround the monastery and if you're feeling particularly energised it is possible to hike there from Prilep. If you do, don’t forget to take plenty of water and a camera!
