Responsible research assessment considers the appropriate and responsible use of in the assessment of research performance. In this talk Alan Haywood, Professor of Palaeoclimate Modelling, Pro-Dean Research and Innovation in the School of Earth and Environment and chair of the responsible metrics working group, welcomes Stephen Curry, Professor of Structural Biology at Imperial College London and chair of The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), to discuss some of the issues with established methods of assessment like Journal Impact Factor. DORA is a campaigning initiative to improve the ways that we evaluate research and researchers. Its key tenet is to “not use journal-based metrics, such as Journal Impact Factors (JIFs), as surrogate measures of the quality of individual research articles, to assess an individual scientist’s contributions, or in hiring, promotion, or funding decisions” The University of Leeds statement in support of responsible metrics in the assessment of research is available on the Research and Innovation Service website. Professor Curry will discuss our organisational obligations as a DORA signatory, and the opportunities and challenges it presents. He will discuss the work DORA is doing to promote and develop alternative and more holistic processes of research assessment, and how it relates to broader issues of open research practice and enduring issues of equality, diversity and inclusion. To date, 2250 organisations have signed up to the principles of DORA. You can also sign DORA as an individual .
