Perched high in the Entoto Mountains overlooking Addis Ababa, Entoto Maryam Church holds a special place in Ethiopian history as the first royal residence and seat of power of Emperor Menelik II before the establishment of Addis Ababa as the capital. Built in 1877, the church served as both a spiritual center and the political base of Menelik II. From this mountain stronghold, he expanded and consolidated his empire, laying the foundation for modern Ethiopia. The church is famous for its beautiful traditional Ethiopian Orthodox architecture, hand-painted interior artwork, and its adjoining museum that preserves royal artifacts, crowns, garments, and historical relics. The surrounding Entoto Mountains also offer breathtaking panoramic views of Addis Ababa, making it both a historical landmark and a scenic destination. During the opening ceremony of Saint Mary Church in Entoto, around 5,395 cattle were slaughtered as part of the grand celebration. Our guide explained this historic event and shared the rich history behind the church and its importance to Emperor Menelik II. • #Entoto • #EntotoMaryam • #MenelikII • #EthiopianHistory • #AddisAbaba • #Ethiopia • #RoyalHistory • #HistoricEthiopia • #OrthodoxChurch • #EthiopianHeritage
