Fedora 17 installation demo, Part 1 of 2

D05_2012/11/04 by Scott Westlake Target audience: New users to linux Knowledge: Distro Hardware Platform: Home Desktop 32bit or 64bit PC (x86) Part X of 2 Video length is 28:40 minutes long, excluding youtube's pause annotations Video is long and informative. Author's note: I do not recommend Fedora 17. (Instead use other better tested Linux distros-- namely Opensuse, Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint -- to which each of these there's an install demo in my channel) -- See the video and description on why this is. Sources online: http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedor... http://www.imgburn.com/ (free MsWindows burning tool) Other resources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_%... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_di... Tool Used: http://www.imgburn.com/ Recording: Screen Resolution: 1024x768 No audio Youtube quality: Sometimes it looks good, if it looks bad at the start wait about 15 seconds. Youtube alters uploads of videos, so the font doesn't look ideal, and unfortunately I cannot control this.. Linux Background: Fedora is a Linux distribution-- All Linux distributions get their "kernel" (a crucial part of the software), from kernel.org. Hence, one who uses "fedora", also uses "linux" because the kernel is really a "Linux kernel" named after Linus Torvalds. Linus Torvalds won a piece of the Millenium technology award in Finland for starting the kernel project, and he continues to do work on the linux kernel. Demo uses:: Fedora version 17 32-bit (Fedora aka "Beefy Miracle" for version 17) ( Fedora-17-i686-Live-Desktop.iso -- which uses GNOME by default) -Redhat, the sponsor of this distro also is well known for their "Redhat" linux enterprise distro which requires subscription. -Other popular family distro, but which is community free is "Cent OS" linux, and isn't sponsored by Redhat. Recommendations: I wish I can recommend fedora, but I cannot. I have already put some time into checking out fedora, I may as well cover it and demonstrate why I decided it should be avoided rather than praised. Sorry fedora fans (If you watch the caveats, you'll probably understand my position.) I filed in these bugs to the fedora project anyways and try my best to remain un-bias. but a linux installer that does not complete is a distro to avoid overall, gives a bad reputation to Linux. I demonstrate a critical bug in the video which illustrates a near to complete installation for a new user, and how to avoid it. If you insist and wish to proceed with fedora despite my unrecommendations, I point out the usual tools and procedure as follows. If you are using MsWindows and want a free and reliable cd image tool, then check out imgburn. If your computer is powerful enough (has at least 3 gigs of ram and has a Processor that supports 'Virtualization'), then you should check out VirtualBox or Vmware. An .iso file does not need to be burned when using one of these two special encapsulating programs. The demonstration utilizes a totally blank harddrive. Installing Linux to a harddrive where there's already existing userdata is outside the scope of the given demonstration video. If you have a 64-bit processor, you may wish to download the 64-bit edition iso instead of the 32-bit one. Procedure: (download the .iso of course) Create the boot media. - ImgBurn: - When using this tool, you will immediately notice an 'Write image file to disc' button. You click on this so that you can later select your iso to burn to cd. Usb booting.- pendrive (Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.1.5.exe) - If you prefer to boot the "fedora-installer" from usb. Download the universal-usb-installer**.exe from the pendrive site and run it. Use the Mswindows Disk management (right-click My Computer and choose Manage, it'll be the 'Disk *' node) : you'll have to wipe out the whole usb drive. Have only 1 partition on the usb device. This 1 partition on the usb has to be FAT32. Once the partition is made, it then has to be mounted as a letter drive in MsWindows. You use this driveletter with the universal-usb-installer-exe application. You keep the ".iso" and .exe files inside your Downloads folder. You execute the universal-usb-installer-exe from your Downloads folder. ( There is also 'unetbootin', but I do not have data on it's sucess rate http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ .) VirtualBox/Vmware.- You do not need to burn it of course. The special Virtual environment application can use the .iso file directly. Install Fedora.- I caution on the glitch. Demo of post-install tasks: adobe flash install, Mate desktop, How to enable gnome-classic, How to enable GNOME desktop icons. Troubleshooting.- Boot-repair iso may be able to repair Fedora. Try Fedora's install media first to try to repair the linux grub. If MsWindows boot is broken, boot-repair or Paragon rescue iso should be checked out; a video is available for boot repair.
