Join us for an epic 22-day kid-friendly self-drive camping trip in Hokkaido in June! Day 12 After breakfast at Sunayu camp and using the superb public toilet to wash up, we packed up our tent and drove to Iozan (Sulphur Mountain) 硫黄山, part of Akan National Park. Iozan means naked in Ainu language. Mapcode:731 713 768*55 The landscape was so barren and misty, that it felt like we were on another planet. We did not stay here too long as it probably isn’t healthy to inhale the sulphur fumes too much. Next, we headed for Mashu 3rd Observatory Mapcode:613 870 628*22 Along the way, we made a quick stop at Kawayu Park Ranch 川湯パーク牧場 to see horses. You can ride horses at the ranch, but we were only there to see Hokkaido horses. Mapcode:731 745 091*55 Mashu-ko (Mashu Lake) is part of the Akan Mashu National Park It is also called Kamuito, the lake of the gods, in Ainu language and considered sacred by the Ainu people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akan_Ma... There are actually at least three different Mashu Lake Obervatories, but as it was so foggy that day, we only bothered to drive to Mashu 3rd Observatory. We only saw dense fog and zero view of the lake. Have you watched the horror movie The Fog before? The fog at Lake Mashu reminded me of this movie. Anyway, Lake Mashu is so often shrouded in mist that it is believed that you will have bad luck if you do manage to view the lake. https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20... Next, we drove towards Notsuke-hanto Notsuke Peninsula (hanto means pensinsula) Along the way, we stopped at Kaiyo Observatory 開陽台展望台 in Nakashibetsu. Mapcode:976 104 327*58 Chanced upon signage for a Kaiyohdai Auto Camp, so we went to take a quick look. It was just so-so. Continued the drive to Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center 野付半島ネイチャーセンター , and parked our car there. Unfortunately, all exhibit information in the nature center was in Japanese only. Notsuke Peninsula is a sand-spit off the east coast of Hokkaido. 63 https://japantravel.navitime.com/en/a... There was an exhibition of drawings of cranes by local elementary and middle school children. My kids enjoyed the drawings done by their Japanese peers. https://kai-hokkaido.com/en/feature_v... What is a sand spit? http://www.coastalwiki.org/wiki/Sand_... After that we left the building and continued on foot to Narawaraナラワラ, a field with some silent, dead trees. Mapcode: 941 663 731 Further down is Todowara トドワラ , a field with more dead trees. Mapcode:941 579 410*55 There were some wild flowers growing in the grassy areas, but June is a little early. I suppose in July or August, there would be much more wild flowers here. Mapcode:941 522 367*44 The scenery at Notsuke Hanto is really amazing and very unusual. We spent at least 2 hours enjoying nature here. Very pleased that we visited. Next we drove to Shibetsu and passed by the port area, before locating the night’s camp - Shibetsu Sea Park Auto Camp. https://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/Hotel_... When we asked for information regarding dinner and onsen, camp staff gave us a very useful guide map of Shibetsu town. It’s a small rural town with a 7-11 and a much larger supermarket too. After ramen dinner, we used the onsen at Hotel Kawabata which was open to “day”-trippers too. Let me explain here that I do not add the cost of onsen to the daily cost of camp accommodation, as I feel that onsen experience comes more under “activities” expense. It would not be fair to add a pleasant activity under accommodation expense. I would, however, add the cost of taking a shower in a camp as that’s part of the cost of using the camp’s facilities. Taking a quick 10-minute shower in a coin shower in camp or at a small and cheap sento cannot be compared with using an onsen. Date of Travel 1st June to 23rd June Rental car: Toyota Isis (an MPV for 6 of us) Camping Tips: We bought a cheap S$60 6-man tent (was able to fit 2 adults and 4 kids laid out like sardines, hahaha!) from Beach Road Army Market in Singapore. #family #fam #kids #familytime #travel #TravelTuesday #kidsactivities #learningthroughtravel #children #fun #activitiesforkids #freethingstodo #hokkaido #Japan #hokkaidojapan #japantravel #japantrip #hokkaidotrip #hokkaidotravel #traveljapan #discoverjapan #camping Daily Beetle by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
