Friday 21st April 2017 saw the last day of London Underground’s District Line ‘D78 stock’ sub-surface trains operate in regular passenger service operating a service between Upminister and Gunnersbury/Richmond/Ealing Broadway. External shots filmed at: Gunnersbury (late running with the train having to reverse here on first trip) Barking (penultimate eastbound departure, whilst in passenger service) Dagenham Heathway (overtaking the ‘D’ onboard a C2C 357) Monument (last eastbound departure) Upminister (last arrival into platform 4 in passenger service) Ealing Broadway (Empty-Coaching-Stock movement to Ealing Common) Train was operating diagram ‘Train 4’ on the day formed of driving units 7007 (Eastbound) and 7032 (Westbound), as with all previous London Underground last trains, a special commemorative headboard in the form of stickers where applied to the front/back of the train with Westbound/Eastbound District line and 1980-2017 ’37 Years’ of D Stock operation. The ‘D78 stock’ trains where introduced to the District Line on the 28th January 1980 to replace the ageing CO/CP and R stock trains which used to operate on the line previously. The D stock trains where constructed by Metro-Cammell between 1978 and 1981, and boasted a number of unique features at the time, such as spring loaded control handle as opposed to a ‘dead man’s handle’ which previous LU trains operated with and most notably ‘single leaf sliding doors’. Like the ‘A & C’ stock that used to operate on the Metropolitan/Circle/Hammersmith & City lines (not forgetting the old East London line) the ‘D stock’ is being replaced by the new standardised sub-surface ‘S7/8’ stock built by Bombardier in Derby boasting air-conditioning walk-through trains, which are longer, more spacious, more efficient and in the not too distant future will be able to operate with Automatic Train Operation (ATO) meaning that trains will be able to run closer together (like the deep-level tube lines) meaning London can move more people, faster and efficiently. 28th January 1980 – 21st April 2017 The ‘D’ stock farewell tour 7th May 2017 M Griffiths Videos 2017 ©
