History of flip clocks in the US is sparse. No one thought to record the happenings in the clock world, and brace yourself - there was no internet in the 70s and 80s. But from what we can gather, it seems that perhaps, it was the Japanese made Copal Caslon Model 201 that kicked off the flip clock craze from 1966-1970. This video introduces the clocks, reviews early print advertisement and demonstrates disassembly of this wonderful little flip clock by Copal Japan (imported by Ropat, Culver CIty, CA). Corrections: The face of this clock is glass! not plastic as I stated (as you can tell, I'm very new to this old clock). No wonder it looked perfect. Superior construction on this early flip clock.
