Darth Vader on a "BUDGET" (with suit-up)

This video is for anyone who might be thinking about tackling the DIY on a Darth Vader build. I began my painful journey back in May of 2019 and I found out really quick that it was going to cost a little more than I had hoped for to purchase all of my parts. I figured I could salvage some useful parts from a few different places and cut some costs in the long run. After spending some time modifying parts and building others I abandoned the idea that I could make something that looked exactly like a Star Wars movie. Whatever I ended up with also would not be eligible for official recognition with the 501st, so I would be spending lots of time and money on a "hobby." It was sometime in 2020 that I started exploring the Mandalorian Mercs because they allowed for a little more creativity and original builds (as long as they were approved). Back to Darth Vader, for decades folks "scratch" built costumes as they tracked down actual sewing patterns and authentic "greeblies" for kit-bashed parts for props. Some model makers and prop builders were able to get molds of movie props while others had to find them for sale online. This quickly become a daunting task that ended up costing fans large amounts of money, with some paying anywhere from $2k-5k in hard cash. During the last 10 years or so, markets have been saturated with mass produced "collector toys" that have reached a price point so low that you would have to be a true fan, or someone desperate for frustration and heartache, to even attempt to build one. I wasn't aware of these things when I began and I was already several hundred dollars invested to just give up the whole project. I was able to make small changes to the original suit over the years and as of this past Halloween, this is where I stand on wrapping this project up. I used some unconventional methods, and some of the pieces of the costume could still be improved upon, but I am officially retiring my Darth Vader so that I can re-focus on my personalized Mandalorian Mercs costume. If anyone is going to attempt to start building their own Darth Vader, just know that there is a complete Darth Vader Supreme kit by Jazwares that anyone can buy for $1,000 plus shipping. It might seem like a steep price, but if you don't have the skill, tools, materials, and work areas to build one it is going to be cheaper to buy their product. Not to mention the countless hours of planning, patterns, fabrication, and prep and paint needed to finish the parts... all without pay. Even if you cut some steps and had a 3D printer, you would still need to have the tools, materials, and skills needed to finish the prints. If I had to do things over... I would just spend the money and call it a much better deal. If I still haven't convinced you, or if a "screen accurate" Darth Vader isn't what you want, then do whatever you would like. I've learned a lot from this process, so perhaps I paid for some experience and personal growth... Enjoy the video!
