Thank you for your cooperation. ---- 00:00 OP 02:22 Concerns at age 50 06:57 What kind of people will blossom? 10:06 Depression in the 50s 11:53 Ideals and reality Today, I would like to talk about the theme of "People who blossom from age 50 and people who stop at age 50." This is the title of a book introduced by Atsuhiko Nakata on YouTube University, and I feel like I borrowed the title as it is. Apart from the contents of the book, I would like to talk about the theme of 50 years old from the perspective of a psychiatrist. There are many people in their 50s who visit psychiatrists, and I think there are quite a few who become depressed in their 50s and visit for the first time. Some people with delayed paraphrenia start to have delusions in their 50s and 60s and start to have trouble with their neighbors, and some people have recently learned about developmental disorders and come to see a psychiatrist for the first time because they think they might have them. There are also people who start to have PTSD problems at this age, and people who become depressed because of inheritance issues. What kind of age is 50? In the era of 100-year lifespans, it is in the middle, but it feels quite late. You are born at age 0 and spend your childhood, and from 15 to 30 you go through adolescence, or a period when your brain develops, and then from your 30s to 50s you work hard in society and raise children, and I feel like you finally reach your 50s when you are complete. The retirement age for the Self-Defense Forces is 55. I started my career as a doctor in the Self-Defense Forces, so I still have the feeling that 55 is the retirement age, but I think it's common these days to work until 65, then work a few more years, until around 70. ■Worries at 50 I'd like to break down what it's like to be 50 and what worries me into six categories. Speaking of my body, my physical strength is declining and I'm starting to have more chronic illnesses. I'm not feeling as energetic, I'm not doing as well as I used to, I wonder if I should diet more, even if I diet, my body just feels worse, etc. I go to the gym saying I need to get stronger, but I can't keep it up and I end up getting injured. It's a pretty tough time with work and family. If you have children, for example, you have to support energetic adolescents from 10 to 20 years old, and when they become university students, it costs a lot of money, and recently, you often have to think about your children's job hunting, so in that sense, it's a difficult time because there is a lot of pressure. Parents also need care at 70 to 80 years old, and in some cases, one parent dies and you have to take care of the other parent, and there are issues with inheritance, and so on. There are many different types of families, where some have inheritances, while others don't, and you help the parents financially to cover their living expenses. It's just so difficult. There are positions at work, and people who are successful have their own struggles, things they have to do, and responsibilities. On the other hand, people who haven't been able to build a career well, such as temporary workers, find it difficult to find a job, and it's almost impossible to change jobs. And there are clerical jobs. There are fewer clerical jobs in Tokyo, so it's often difficult to find a job. Even if you've been promoted, it's still tough, and even if you haven't been able to build a career, I think it's an age where you're still pretty lost. Your friendships and relationships can be tough because both parties have their own problems, so it's hard to talk openly. It's hard to go out and make friends with the same hobbies. On the other hand, when you reach your 60s and 70s, it's easier to get along with the people around you, but at this age, it's a nervous time for many things, so it's hard to ask for advice. I think it's also a time when you're very anxious about money. You just need money, and it's a time that costs money. Then there's learning and hobbies. If you have a subject or hobby that you like, it can be a way to relax, but most people don't. So I think it's a time when you feel envious of people who have one. If you try to find a hobby from scratch, it's difficult because other things are difficult and it's hard to do that. I think 50-year-olds in the past and 50-year-olds today are completely different. Unlike 50-year-olds 10 or 20 years ago, they have no time to spare, they are made to work really hard, and it is becoming an era where leaders are expected to work even harder, and I feel a generation gap. It's not that new employees in their 20s are pampered...
