We are ready. Camera’s are ready. The Tico is ready to talk more about pruning. In front of us we have a beautiful Ficus we have been pruning maybe for 10 years. We did a canopy reduction and thinning out of this tree to keep it the same size. We don’t want it to get larger or smaller. We don't want to do topping or extra branch removal to stimulate extra vertical growth. We want to keep this kind of tree with more horizontal growth with slow moving sap in the branch which will create less growth of the tree; a slower grow has horizontal branches. With vertical branches, they will grow faster. By doing the right pruning we provoke less excessive growth, by doing the wrong pruning we are going to provoke excessive growth. This principle is important. A lot of people believe the more branches they cut the longer the tree is going to stay pruned, no, the more branches you cut the more destruction you do to the tree. You may make the tree smaller by doing a lot of topping..... But, no topping. Never top a tree. Topping is to cut a branch totally without leaving a lead branch. ...the response of topping is that branches will be a monstrosity. It will be big. You will have a dense canopy and destroy the natural branch structure of the tree. To me this tree has a beautiful natural branch structure. I am here again. This tree has a very unique branch structure. The way the tree was selected from the nursery, the tree developed a beautiful multi trunk structure. By years of growing and doing the right pruning the tree developed a beautiful branch structure. It’s a beautiful tree, from the bottom to the top. Beautiful branch structure. Opened up in here to appreciate the branch structure of the tree. Selecting some of the branches, we cut because the branches were too low. We wanted more space between the ground and the branches. This one in here we cut now, we decided the branch was too low. This one also to create more space and to balance the branch structure and height. This time also I decided to remove a big branch that was coming low. It didn’t make sense and it wasn't safe. It was too heavy, eventually it could crack and damage the other trunk where it was attached and we could lose the branch. When you see the tree it's more manicured compared to a natural growth fruit tree. The more branches we have in a fruit tree, the more fruit we will have on the tree.
