(5 Dec 1994) T/I 10:02:03 NADIA COMANECI BACKFLIPS ON 5-YEAR DEFECTION Bucharest, Romania Natsot. Duration: 1.27" World famous gymnast Nadia Comaneci has returned home, to Bucharest, Romania, five years after making a daring escape to flee the regime of communist hardliner Nicolai Ceausescu. Comaneci, who scored the first perfect "ten" at the 1976 Olympics, arrived with a Romanian team that had just won the world title. Now 33 and accompanied by American fiance Bart Conner, himself an Olympic champion in 1984, Comaneci left Romania a month before the fall of the communist regime; her private life, tarnished by allegations she was a Communist sympathiser. Some refused to welcome her return, criticising Comaneci for failing to raise the level of gymnastics in Romania, despite her five Olympic golds and two world titles. During her ten day trip she was to meet President Ion Iliescu and visit her old training base at Onesti in the north. Comaneci donated 100,000 (US ) dollars to train up-and-coming performers. In her time she won five Olympic gold medals and two world titles. SHOWS: Plane arrives at airport. Children in Romanian tracksuits waiting with flowers. Team disembarks from plane.
