After a quick partial 3D scan to align bushings later with complete scans, we remove the (4DU1 performance rear) drive unit's 3 mounts, and the subframe's 4 chassis mounts as well as 2 rear lower arm inboard bushings located in the subframe. Some of this was very easy with the subframe & rear drive unit out of the car, as shown in episode 8, with some simple tools including an Amazon busing push/pull set. However the 2 forward subframe bushings were fighting us every step along the way because there is no way to seat the cup side of the push pull bushing tool and that toolset does not even have a big enough diameter so we're mainly just discovering & struggling here, bending some tube scraps and the all thread rods. So this video is not the best or right way to follow but it does show you it's possible with conventional tools. Subscribe to see what comes next! This struggle is motivation for us to use the data acquired to make a custom tool set in the future that will surely make a solid subframe bushing swap a total breeze compared to the monkey business shown here. We will also make a tool for the RLCA inboard (bushing to bearing conversion) designed specifically for letting that job get done while the subframe is still in the car, for those that don't care to drop the subframe for access to chassis and motor mounts. As for the Drive unit, once separated fromt he subframe (as seen in episode 8) those come out really easy, either with the Amazon push pull set used as intended or with a hammer on the right (motor) side. Or it may be even easier with the motor cover removed but leaving that alone didn't set us back. The point of all this work is to develop and install solid bushings, just like we do on all the cars within the Parts Shop MAX catalog. They give us an increase in vehicle response to drivers inputs, feedback to let the driver know what the car is doing from the "seat of the pants" feel, it puts the power to the ground faster too. When you toss the car sideways that loads the rubber bushings and they snap back in an unpredictable way causing loss of control. Most importantly perhaps in an electric car would be amplifying the pleasing sound when the electric drivetrain is working hard, similar to the aural feedback of an ICE car (internal combustion engine), when we add performance exhaust. There's almost no need to look at the tachometer and the drivers attention can be two turns down the track while still knowing exactly what the motor is doing.
