Chinese vessel likely mapping out Australia’s ‘critical infrastructure’ for a ‘future operation’
ASPI Senior Analyst Malcolm Davis claims a Chinese government research vessel off Australia’s south coast is “clearly spying”. “The interesting thing to note with this particular ship is that it’s following the route of a submarine cable that’s really important to Australia’s economy and infrastructure,” he told Sky News Australia. “It’s about losing banking systems, it’s about losing stock markets, it’s about infrastructure and logistical systems that go down, so those submarine cables are really critical infrastructure for Australia.” Mr Davis suggested that the Chinese vessel is mapping out the submarine cable for a “future operation”.
