I'll Believe It When I See It: Truth vs Facts

The first films I made were documentaries. As a child, I used to record everyday life in my neighborhood, and even made a few professional short docs as an adult. I’m interested in the question of whether or not something is real, especially as it relates to filmmaking. Errol Morris and Werner Herzog, for example, are two leading non-fiction filmmakers who have come under fire for manipulating events in their documentaries. These days, though, it seems it’s acceptable to include some degree of non-literal truth in a documentary. The responsibility to discern what is real or not then falls to the viewer. So what is truth, anyway? This episode of I’ll Believe It When I See It takes a brief look at documentary cinema’s philosophic quandary.
