Rescued Reef; The Honolulu Waikiki Outrigger Reef’s Remodeling Revisited (Humane Architecture). The hosts for this show were Martin Despang and Jay Fidell. The discussion was: With the slimmed Thing Tech Hawaii format bravely mainly dedicating itself rightly so to raising public awareness around the current geopolitical turmoils this architecture show seems the odd child. But it might have been kept by Jay Fidell because of the legitimacy that the built environment might indeed be substantial for both environmental / ecology and human(e) equity / ethics as a foundation for planet and people peacefulness. The key and with that SHIFT movement principle / paradigm might be essentiality as what it really needs and takes and not more. This show rather than architecture from its whole / entirety examines the sum of its parts / details and material and construction ethos as the criteria for examination and evaluation. The object of observation is architect developer Roy Kelley’s Outrigger Reef Hotel in Waikiki ( see its previous / original condition on Think Tech Hawaii human(e) Architecture Show Outriggering Hospitality the Outrigger Hotel on Kalakaua Avenue revisited) and its recent 2023 80 million dollars make over revisited. Based on a rich visual analysis the discussion will be: what drives and should drive redevelopments these days: cultural or commercial motivations and, as it was the case in mid-century America. Might there be a way to return to a non conflict of interest of the two. The takeaway was: Hospitality as Hawaii’s major economy could benefit from adopting SHIFT strategies as to preserve as much as possible of vintage legacy while carefully truthfully applying real, conscious and serious vs. pretentious and surficial superficial resource management to any new construction.
