projectlyttelton.org.nz Grow Local is a practical philosophy incorporating two basic ideas. The first is 'growing' and refers primarilary to growing food as well as other types of produce. The second is 'local' meaning, grown close to where it is eaten or used. The source of production to destination of consumption is energy efficient and promotes an overall process which is quick, uncomplicated, close to nature and not overly technical .It can be complimentary to International Agrobusiness, in the way imported stoneground tortilla taste great with homemade tomatillo and jalepeno salsa, but it is also in competition because it gives preference to ways of production that do not require importing anything! Grow Local is all about delivering fresh, unadultarated, healthy food to our tables. If the compost, soil, seed, machinery and labour are local and the dinner table where the food is eaten is close to where you live, then this is 'Grow Local' The phrase Grow Local is fresh and catchy but the practice marked the beginnings of human culture. Growing locally is still a common practice all over the world however in post industrial societies we often give this up in favour of the global. Project Lyttelton has initiated and supports a number of projects that practice this philosophy, its core to our way of being. By getting involved in grow lcoal we enable ourselves to continue, protect and rediscover how to grow many types of produce within the communities where we live.
