Riding Chessie`s Safety Express...September, 1981

C&O J3a 4-8-4 # 614 and the Chessie Safety Express came to Cumberland, Md. on the second weekend of September, 1981 for a weekend of mountain railroading at it`s best. Saturday September 12th trip was from Cumberland to Terra Alta, W.Va. on the B&O`s ledgendary 17 Mile Grade. Sunday September 13th trip was from Cumberland to Somerset, Pa. on the famous Sandpatch Grade and the S&C Branch from Rockwood to Somerset. After riding similar trips in 1980, my buddy Rod Miller and myself decided we wanted to come home with more than just some color prints and slides. So I went to a local photo store and rented a Super 8 movie camera for the weekend. After buying 20 rolls of film, off we went to Chessie country. The movies were processed and spliced together on 3 reels. Last year after over 20 years of not looking at the films, we pulled out the projector. After cleaning the contacts on the bulb it fired right up and the movies still looked perfect. I had them digitized and then edited them. Now 30 years later, this is the view we had from our seats on the train. Hats off to Ross Rowland and the Steam Locomotive Corporation of America (SLCA) for always putting on a great show.
