Usually people ask what is the indication for endoscopy. Endoscopy is usually done to detect problems in the food pipe, stomach and the upper small intestine. Indications for upper endoscopy is acidity and gastric problems. These patients usually come with burning, bloating and gas and usually the first time it is not to go for endoscopy, we go for medicines. Usually 10 – 14 days of medicines if it don’t work, then we do endoscopy basically to look for ulcers and H. pylori infection. Other indication is to detect ulcers in the small intestine or the stomach. One more indication is sometimes patient has difficulty in swallowing, weight loss, then we suspect cancer in these patients and we do endoscopy. Basically it is to find our problems in the esophagus, stomach and the upper intestine to detect ulcers, cancer and even to detect diarrheas, sometimes when we have problems in the small intestine.
