Naxos stands apart from its bustling Cycladic neighbors, offering an authentic Greek experience with idyllic beaches, ancient ruins, and mountain trails. In the heart of the island, the Chora welcomes visitors with the iconic Temple of Apollo, a 6th century BC marvel overlooking the harbor. The island's prized Naxian marble lives on in massive Kouros statues scattered across the landscape, while the restored Temple of Demeter sits serenely among fertile fields. At the island's center rises Mount Zeus (Zas in Greek), the Cyclades' highest peak. Local legend claims its cave as Zeus's birthplace, where his mother Rhea hid him from his child-devouring father Cronus. Here, nymphs raised the future king of gods until he returned to overthrow Cronus and free his siblings. My hiking journey began with a local bus ride from Naxos Chora to Filoti village, my starting point for the summit trek. The trail led me past Zeus's cave and the cool Aria Spring, creating a loop back to Filoti. For those interested in exploring more of the island's cultural heritage, Naxos Bus Transfer offers guided tours featuring the Temple of Demeter, Melanes Kouros statue, and the historic Panagia Drosiani church.
