The tornadoes during the evening of May 6, 1965 across the Twin Cities were a costly and very deadly event. It was a different time...a time before advanced weather radar, and a time where there was very little advanced warning of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. Listen now, and imagine listening to this live from your basement in 1965, as eyewitnesses called into WCCO Radio with their reports of seeing funnels and tornadoes. One Robert Clark from Fridley called in a tornado striking Fridley Junior High School occupied with children before a spring carnival started. Remarkably, no students were killed despite windows getting blown out and the roof getting taken off of the gymnasium. Sadly, as it was reported, Mr. Clark was killed shortly after by another tornado moving through. Overlaid over the audio are weather maps, radar, and damage pictures from the outbreak. In total, there were 7 tornadoes, including 4 F4s over 6 different counties. 14 people were killed, and over 500 people were injured.
