From the "Hymns and Anthems" Columbia Masterworks LP recording of the choir comes this truly sweet entreaty with a text that expresses our longing to be at one with our Lord. Author: Henry Downton, 1841 Text: Ps. 59:16 Henry Downton, a priest of the Church of England, entered the world at Pulverbatch, Shropshire, England, on February 12, 1818. His father was John Downton, sub-Librarian of Trinity College, Cambridge. That bookishness carried over to Henry, who graduated from Trinity College with his B.A. in 1840 and his M.A. three years later. Downton wrote and translated prose and hymns. He contributed hymns to the Church of England Magazine the published them in Hymns and Verses Original and Translated (1873). Tune: Song 13 Orlando Gibbons composed SONG 13 in soprano and bass parts. Used as a setting for a text from the Song of Songs, the tune was published in George Withers' Hymnes and Songs of the Church (1623) as hymn number 13 (hence the tune name). He was an English composer, virginalist and organist of the late Tudor and early Jacobean periods (baptised 25 December 1583 – 5 June 1625).[1] He was a leading composer in England in the early 17th century. Verses in this recording: 1. For Thy mercy and Thy grace, Faithful through another year, Hear our song of thankfulness; Savior and Redeemer, hear! 4. In our weakness and distress, Rock of strength, be Thou our Stay; In the pathless wilderness Be our true and living Way. 6. Keep us faithful, keep us pure, Keep us evermore Thine own. Help, oh, help us to endure; Fit us for the promised crown.
