Dianne Sutherland is a British botanical painter and illustrator. Initially, she trained as a ceramics painter but then worked as a freelance artist and illustrator. Later she decided to pursue her interest of plant life further and studied plant biology at a university. "Sketching Nature" is a book about creating and keeping a botanical sketchbook. The book is split in three sections: why keep a sketchbook and how to make one yourself, techniques and projects. The first part of the book covers various sketchbooks readily available for purchase and how to make one, painting and sketching tools and materials as well as sketching subjects, place and time. In the second part of the book, the author discusses observational and tonal drawing and painting, colours and mixing and composition among many other things. Third part includes projects in which the author also discusses her process. The projects may be a bit too challenging for absolute watercolour and drawing beginners, however if you're interested in botanical painting, there's plenty to learn. While the projects may be challenging for complete beginners in watercolour or drawing, the book is a rich resource for those interested in botanical art. Experienced artists will find it particularly insightful, and newcomers will discover valuable inspiration and guidance.
