Biophotonics is the science at the convergence of light and biological matter. It is expected to play a key role in next generation diagnostic, analytical, and therapeutic modalities of the 21st century. This is clearly demonstrated by its rapidly expanding scientific literature and industrial growth, as the global market for medical imaging technologies was US$ 73 billion in 2018. Biophotonics played a key role in the 2015 the International Year of Light, a global initiative to raise awareness of how light-based science and technologies provide solutions to challenges in energy, education, agriculture, and health. In 2020, Biophotonics reinforced its importance during the last COVID-19 outbreak and continues to provide healthcare solutions worldwide.
