Wash Your Produce (Food Safety Minute)

Washing your fruits and vegetables is worth the effort. Video transcript: I’m Larry French with Washington State Department of Health in the Food Safety Program and this is a Food Safety Minute. One of the things you can do to protect your family is to wash your produce. Think how many people have handled the produce before you bought it. Field workers, processing plant workers, people at the grocery store and even yourself. And think about how many outbreaks we read in the newspapers that were caused by produce. Is it difficult? No. Washing produce is very simple. You just do it under cold running water. For leafy greens, berries, cherry tomatoes, you can use a colander—a very simple piece of equipment. For larger produce, again rinse under cold running water and this includes melons. So one of the things to remember, it’s worth the time to improve the health of your family.
