Invited talk / 2022 Annual Meeting of the Philippine Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Manilla, Philippines Malignant large bowel obstruction can pose significant challenges to the surgeon and carry significant morbidity for the patient. Traditionally, the majority of patients who presented with malignant large bowel obstruction were treated with surgical intervention, often requiring the placement of a stoma (ileostomy or colostomy). Endoscopic stent placement is a viable alternative for a select group of patients with acute large bowel obstruction from cancer. Endoscopic stenting can be carried out by an experienced therapeutic endoscopist and it yields several advantages, including less stoma formation, fewer complications, less mortality, and a shorter hospital stay. In this lecture presented by Professor Maher A. Abbas during the University of Philippines annual virtual surgery course, the indication, patient preparation, patient selection, and technical aspect of endoscopic stenting is reviewed. Professor Maher A. Abbas is a world-renowned therapeutic endoscopist with significant expertise in the use of endoscopic interventions on the colon and rectum, sparing the patient from traditional surgical interventions. He currently cares for local and international patients in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Visit Dr Maher A.
