Parasites are fairly prevalent globally, particularly in tropical environments. In the United States, the two main parasites with high infection rates are giardia and pinworm. However, diagnosing parasites can be challenging, as symptoms can be non-specific and testing methods vary. There is a growing interest in using genomic testing from stool samples to identify parasites, but comprehensive diagnostic panels are still being developed. It is important to be cautious of overdiagnosing and self-treating for parasites without proper testing and medical guidance. The balance between over-sterilization and exposure to pathogens is a topic of debate, with some suggesting that our highly sanitized environments may negatively impact our immune system's ability to handle infections. Parasites are difficult to eliminate from the environment and can survive in extreme conditions. High heat and low moisture environments are effective in getting rid of them. Maintaining a more ancestral lifestyle, with closer contact with family and animals, can be beneficial for the microbiome. Over-sterilizing or under-sterilizing the environment can disrupt the balance of microbes. Good practices include eliminating additives in water, avoiding unnecessary sterilization, and being mindful of exposure to unfamiliar people and environments. A new test is being developed to profile parasites and the gut microbiome, with a panel of 30 parasites being targeted.
