«Giant's Causeway is one of the most spectacular geologic sights in Europe.» (USGS) The history of the Giant's Causeway begins about 60 million years ago, when the Mid-Atlantic Ridge was pushing North America and Eurasia apart, forming what is now the North Atlantic. This process led to dramatic volcanic activity along this zone of crustal weakness, which formed the Causeway Coast and the rocks of the Giant's Causeway. In three eruptive phases (interrupted by long periods of quiescence) with a total of 17 fissure eruptions, molten (liquid) mantle material rose to the surface, cooled, solidified into rock and formed the basalt columns here.
