In this video, I explain things to know before learning French. Before fully diving into French, it’s important to understand the distinctive nuances that exist in the language, which is what I show. The following are similarities and differences in French, compared to English: 1. French is a Romance language, which is Latin-based, having the same 26 letters as English 2. French has vowel accents that affect pronunciation 3. French word order is relatively the same as in English 4. French nouns have gender (masculine & feminine), affecting articles and adjective forms 5. French has verb conjugations that change for person and number, and its tenses expand more than in English 6. French has more article rules than English 7. French has 2 forms of you: informal and formal 8. French has a lot of variations in its past tense: compound, imperfect, pluperfect (past perfect), literary simple past, and past anterior 9. French has a lot of variations in the subjunctive mood: present, past, imperfect, and pluperfect 10. French has a lot of complexity when listening to the language: silent letters, liaisons, nasal vowels, contractions, syllable-timed elements, and rules for consonants 11. French has a flow of words based on elisions, commonly dropping vowels and using apostrophes to keep the flow smooth 12. I forgot to put this one in the video, but it will be mentioned when explaining verbs: French has no sense of progression (ings at the end of participles) Feel free to correct any mistakes I may have made while explaining, and feel free to share this video with many people. I appreciate the support. About me: I’m Alex, and I’m a student at UNLV. As I finish my Spanish degree, I advance in my linguistic skills, learn new concepts, and understand how learning within languages works. I’m fluent in Russian, Hebrew, and English with advanced levels of Spanish and German. I’m just trying to make languages seem very easy.
