Montecristo No.2 Cigar Review

The Montecristo No.2. I know...say no more, right! A cigar that will go down in history, right from the get go. This Cuban Pyramid is 6,1/8" x 52 Medium strength and body. It has a great finish that is short and not offensive to any smoker. This Cuban puro is such a well rounded cigar blend that will please the aficionado, beginner and everyone between. It is a standard production cigar that was placed into production pre-embargo (before 1960). Even though the brand was established in 1935. this cigar and brand has risen to international status. When Alonso Menendez purchased the "Particulares Factory", he needed a name for his new brand. He decided to name that brand after a novel written by Alexander Dumas' "The Count of Montecristo". This adventure story was a favorite among the torcedores and factory workers. The logo was made from the creative minds of John Hunter, morris and Elkan Co. (who was the British distributor for the brand) It is made up of 6 swards fixed in a triangle, and a fleur-de-lis positioned in the center. Menendez and Garcia y Cia later purchased the H. Upmann factory from J. Frankau SA. (who was the sole distributor for the H. Upmann brand in the UK) in 1937, transferring all production to this factory. John Hunter Morris and Elkan Co. amalgamated with J. Frankau to become the famed "Hunters and Frankau", distributor for Cuban cigars in the UK. Once the revolution hit, and the tobacco industry was nationalized. Menendez and Garcia fled and eventually starting up the Cuban brands counterpart of Montecristo. Today, the Non-Cuban version of Montecristo has seen blends from the newly famed A.J. Fernandez, Master blender and roller. A personal favorite of mine. Pre-Light: Nice color on the wrapper, with a good tight roll and cylindrical shape. A light exotic wood and hay aroma floats off the body, while the sent of sweet chocolate, pours out from the foot...a good start! You need to be careful with all cigars when your cutting the head, especially with a "figurado" shape. They often have a large to small wrap on the head, and its easy to cut off too much. You can use your finger as a stop, like a depth gauge. You can also start by cutting back a little at a time and checking the draw as you go. A "V" cutter also works well to. The cold draw gives a bit of a "zing" on the tongue. Coffee and chocolate notes are mostly present. Sweet floral notes make up the bouquet off the foot. First: At this point, I am smiling from "ear to ear". Very light on the retro-hale, and soft fluffy smoke off the draw. A good draw with a little more resistance than I like, but I know from experience, it will open up as I go. Light notes of hay and cedar wood, coffee, nougat and molasses, with a nice wash off the palate. You can taste some spicy pepper notes, without the bite. The ash has held on really well and had a bit of a wonky burn, but corrected itself as I move a long. Second: The white ash always impresses me on how much a bright white color it is, and holds well. Notes of fruit...like plum. Molasses, baking bread, chocolate with the coffee note subsiding. Cedar has always been there, but not making itself as known at times. I even had a pecan butter tart like note that came through. "I'm in heaven." Third: Made it down to the nub with this one! In the last bit the strength picked up and you can taste the build up. More wood coming through with notes of earth and pepper. Now becoming a bit spicy!!! Un-sweeten coffee is still present. Final Thoughts: It takes about 1hr and 40min to smoke. Make sure you take your time and give it time to smoke. This is a cigar that will not disappoint you. The ash stayed on strong with vigor. It has a sweet floral aroma off the foot throughout. Among the many flavor note that were picked up, coffee, cedar wood and chocolate never really faded away completely. "Life is good, but its better with a cigar!" Thanks for watching!
