This drive day took us from the border town of Ipiales across the mountains of southern Colombia, and up through the sugar cane plantations toward the city of Cali covering 500 kilometers. Following the Pan American highway across route 25, we drove on the new freeways connecting to Ipiales, into the mountain communities. The new freeways are spectacular, and include a mile long tunnel in the Daza area. This drive day included the first uncomfortable situations from a safety perspective, the "shakedown tolls" listed were locals looking for money. Everything resolved for less than a dollar, but in the moments leading up to the transaction we didn't know what was happening. It's a good reminder to pay attention to safety warnings in the region. Popular tourist destinations might have higher prices, and there are stories of robberies or worse when traveling through remote regions. The larger communities of Puerto Tejada and Cali were very easy to travel through.
