Neonatal Endotracheal Intubation

Neonatal intubation requires placing a tube within the infant's trachea for assisted breathing. A traditional scope makes it difficult to visualize proper placement of the tube because of the small size of infants, particularly premature babies. Samantha Vish from the College for Creative Studies designed a system of intubation products to simplify the neonatal intubation process. A modified endotracheal tube is guided by fiber optics embedded in the tube walls. This makes the tip of the tube visible through the skin when placed properly in the trachea and not the esophagus. A thin plastic mask is then placed over the infant's mouth and tube to hold it in place. Soft skin adhesive makes it washable and reusable, while plastic that molds under the same lights used to treat jaundice allows for a comfortable fit.
