#digitisedcinefilm #nostalgia #norfolkbroads #familyholiday #norfolk The Norfolk Broads in 1969: Britain's Best-Kept Holiday Secret This film was originally a standard8mm Cine Film Digitised with a Kodak Reels Scanner. This digitised cine film, a precious snapshot from the past, was carefully captured on the beautiful Norfolk Broads during the month of May in the year 1969. We join a charming couple, accompanied by their beloved pet dog, as they embark on a delightful journey aboard their cruiser, exploring various picturesque locations across the expansive Norfolk Broads. A detailed timeline of the film's events is helpfully provided below for your reference. he film gracefully commences with the sight of a majestic yacht sailing past, with a scattering of other boats visible in the background, hinting at the vibrant activity on the waterways. Our journey then leads us to Wroxham, the first village to be featured, where a notably low bridge is navigated with impressive skill and, thankfully, without any mishaps! As we continue our voyage, the camera captures glimpses of several charming properties lining the banks of the Broads as we make our way towards the village of Horning. In Horning, we observe the iconic Ferry Inn, with a collection of inviting cabin cruisers neatly berthed alongside it. A grand house, set back from the waterway, is then passed on the left side of our cruiser, as another cabin cruiser gracefully glides by. Later in the film, the pet dog and his owner are seen standing on a road adjacent to the historic St Lawrence Church in South Walsham. It's worth noting that this particular church sadly suffered destruction by fire in the year 1857. As the cruiser navigates the tranquil waters of the Broads, heading towards Thurne, various parts of the vessel itself are visible, offering a peek into the cockpit, the comfortable living quarters, the sleeping area, and the functional kitchen. The cruiser is then seen tied up alongside a bank as the couple disembark to make their way to the impressive Berney Arms Mill at Reedham, a designated Ancient Monument. The couple are later captured in the memorable act of viewing the breath taking expanse of the Broads from the very top floor of this historic windmill. A church can be spotted in the distance, though its specific identity remains unknown. A small but significant cargo ship, identified as the "Nederland," passes by. Following this, our cabin cruiser proceeds to pass the notable Hardley Cross Monument, situated at the mouth of the River Chet, which eventually leads to the village of Loddon, located approximately three miles further inland. A welcome and much-appreciated tea break is enjoyed, offering inviting views overlooking the serene Broads. The imposing silhouette of Burgh Castle then appears on screen, enhanced by some clever trick photography. Stalham is the next destination to be shown, marking the pleasant conclusion to their memorable holiday in Norfolk. The film tenderly concludes with the charming sight of a graceful swan and two ducks, accompanied by their adorable ducklings, walking serenely past the camera.
