In 1912, Finnish folklorist A.R.Niemi travelled to Valkininkai, Lithuania, as part of his research collecting wax cylinder recordings of Lithuanian folk songs. Honeypaw acquired the unpublished recordings from the Finnish Literature Society in 2023, and this year we received funding from the Lithuanian Council for Culture to study the recordings and present material in the original villages where Niemi collected them. Niemi intended to study the connection between Finnic and Baltic cultures, but he first had to conduct field collection of Lithuanian folklore. In his collected writings, he discusses various Finnic and Baltic songs and texts that he believes are connected. Honeypaw uses his work as a jumping off point for our arrangements. Voi tu bitute asks the bee where it has been flying, and the bee responds that it has been through the forest carrying honey. It the Finnish text, we ask the bee to travel over 9 seas, and from the 10th, return with honey.
