The cigar-making business in La Concepcion, capital of the Bugaba district in Panama's Chiriqui province, dates far back in the history of this region. Aristoteles Almengor, our own Panamanian-born Project Coordinator for The Resort at Isla Palenque, grew up in the Bugaba district and made many memorable visits to La Concepcion, the humble hub for all of the 13 surrounding corregimientos, or subdistricts. Roughly the same size as Boquete, La Concepcion is home to a small, close-knit community. "Almost everyone knows each other," says Aris. "If you go sit in the park on a Sunday, you'll have the chance to see half the town buying lottery before noon." Like many of Panama's towns and villages, the name of the Bugaba district's capital originates with a native cacique, or tribal chief. Within Bugaba, travelers and locals alike enjoy convenient access to stores for good clothes, shoes, furniture, and home appliances, generally on par with what you can find in the commercial center of David, Panama. Bugaba also boasts some unique community-based tourism options -- such as a visit to the Panama Caribbean Tobacco cigar factory, featured in this video. A guided tour of the facilities puts you within smelling-range of the sweet aroma of one of Panama's finest pleasures. The consistent climate, rich volcanic soil, and abundant rainfall of the Chiriqui highlands make the region an agricultural powerhouse. A taste of its award-winning coffee or a whiff of its rich tobacco crop will immediately tell you you're in Panama. And the welcoming local communities who share in Chiriqui's agricultural bounty make your visit an unforgettable one. "I remember being around 12 years old," recalls Aris. "I'd go by bike [to La Concepcion] just to visit a pretty nice chica." Growing up around La Concepcion, Aris witnessed the growth of the Panama Caribbean Tobacco company from a super-small local operation to a thriving business -- mirroring the progress being made in Panama as a whole, thanks to the country's growing reputation for providing spectacular travel experiences immersed in nature and culture. Every August 6th, La Concepcion celebrates the anniversary of Bugaba's establishment as a district; those traveling in Panama towards summer's end are encouraged to join in the local parades and festivities that take place in this beautiful part of Panama.
