MANILA — The lawyer of businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang said Friday he had advised his client not to surrender to authorities until they exhaust all available legal remedies in court. In an interview with DZMM Teleradyo, Ang's lawyer Gabriel Villareal said the businessman should not be considered a criminal as he has not yet faced trial and declaration of guilt. “Bakit naman niya ipagsasapalaran ang sarili niya sa pagsuko? Marami pa siyang natitirang judicial remedies. Hindi naman dapat siyang tinutugis na parang isang kriminal. Wala pa naman tayong trial at declaration of guilt para kay Mr. Ang,” Villareal said. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Thursday offered a P10-million reward for information leading to Ang’s arrest over his alleged involvement in the disappearance of dozens of cockfighting enthusiasts or sabungeros. DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said authorities considered Ang “armed and dangerous,” citing intelligence reports that he was traveling with at least 20 bodyguards despite the Philippine National Police cancelling his firearm licenses. Villareal said the “armed and dangerous” tag on Angg was baseless and that this statement from the government was risky and concerning. “Parang naghahanap tayo ng dahilan at pamamaraan para mapalabas na si Mr. Ang ay nanlaban,” he said. The lawyer said he filed an omnibus motion for the Sta. Cruz Regional Trial Court to reconsider its issuance of warrants of arrest against Ang and 17 others. “Pwedeng pawalan ng bisa yun dahil maaaring nagkamali si judge sa kanyang pag-aaral at sa pag-issue ng warrant of arrest,” Villareal said. He claimed the papers filed before the Department of Justice were incomplete and did not include Ang and other accused’s counter-affidavits. Ang remains in the Philippines, Villareal said. PNP tightens watch on ports to stop Atong Ang’s departure.
