Build in the late 1800s with portions rebuild in the 1930, it follows a similar route to a path that linked earlier Hawaiian settlements along the northwestern coast. This strenuous trail. Often only a foot wide, snakes along the pali, only dropping to sea at Hanakapi'ai and Kalalau. At Kalalau further foot travel is halted by impassable pali. Ke'e Beach to Hanakapi'ai 2mi/3.2km. This stretch is a popular day hike; even a 0.5mi/0.8km hike offers dramatic views of the coast as far west as Nu'aloa Aina. The trail climbs 400ft/122m in the first mile then descends to sea level at Hanakapi'ai. Hanakapi'ai means "bay sprinkling food". It is the only valley that slopes gradually to the sea until Kalalau. In summer a white sand beach forms, but in winter, currents carry the sand out to sea, leaving only rocks. Warning Swimming or wading is dangerous because of surf and rip current especially Sept-Apr when surf is high. Also use caution crossing the stream during flash flood. Hanakapi'ai to Hanakoa 4mi/6.4km. A more strenuous hiking begins when you leave Hanakapi'ai, switch backing up 800ft/244m in 1mi/1.6km to the trail highest point at Space Rock. For the next 2.5mi?3.6km, the trail passes through Hono O Na Pali State Natural Reserve, which encompasses Ho'olulu and Waiahuakua valleys. The trail alternately climbs and drops as it traverses the valleys, crossing Waiahuakua Stream, then drops below 400ft/122m, its lowest point since Hanakapi'ai. At 5.75/9.3km, you get your first view of Hanakoa Valley. At Hanakoa the trail leaves the reserve and reenters the park. Hanakoa means "bay of warriors" or "bay of koa trees". This broad valley, 500 ft above sea level was cultivated by early Hawaiian. Today, sheltered campsites are found on the overgrown agricultural terraces where coffee plants were introduced in the late 1800s. Hanakoa to Kalalau 5mi/8km this is the most strenuous stretch of a long, difficult trail. At 7mi/11.2km, the trail crosses Manono Ridge. Here the coastline bends imperceptibly south, but the shift is sufficient to shield the rest of the coast from trade wind moisture. The result is much less rainfall (20inches at Kalalau compared to 75 inches at Hanakapi'ai) and a more arid landscape that is deeply eroded and often sparsely vegetated. Small gullies gash the red soil, replacing the lush valleys cut by streams fed by plentiful rain. The trail now snakes around sheer ridges, steeply descending and ascending gullies, then traversing other ridges, in a repetitious pattern until Kalalau. The decent from Monono Ridge reaches the trail's lowest elevation 200ft/61m since Hanakapi'ai. Despite increasing aridity, five generally reliable water sources exist between Hanakoa and Kalalau. Feral goats are numerous from here on. This trail section can be very hot. The lush vegetation that offered some shade as far as just passed Hanakoa is gone. From Pohakuao (an ancient land division), the trail begins its 500ft/152m climb up and over Pu'ukula (Red Hill). From Pu'ukula the Kalalau Valley is spread at your feet: fluted ridges stretch to Nu'alolo Kai. Descend slowly and carefully as the slope is crumbling and eroded. You will need to cross Kalalau Stream to access the beach. On the west side a trail leads up to Kalalau Valley to "Big Pool", while the main trail bears right to the camping area. Campers are scattered along the half-mile long flat above the beach; sites are most heavily used near Ho'ole'a Falls. The falls supply drinking water (treat before drinking) and a natural shower. Impassable cliffs descend to the sea at the beach's west end.
