Next is the Friendship knot or also known as the Square knot. in some books I have found this knot called the Square knot, in Ashley (Ashley book of knots) its number is 2391, 2386 and 1423 (The Japanese Bend). I was told that the Scouting movement adopted the Square knot and renamed it the friendship knot. it would symbolise the friendship between two scouts as one scout would tie it for the other. A second purpose would be to tie it backwards so the cross symbol would face forward when attending church, to me it is a very smart looking knot and if the necker/scarf has a pattern its tricky to line up but looks great when done perfectly. To make you aware, I am filming a short series of videos based on the knots taught in Scouting. (UK) This will cover a mixture of Stopper knots (knots at the end of a rope), Bends (joins two ropes together), Hitches (ties to a ring, pole or bar), Lashings (joining poles together), Splices (joining a rope together permanently) and Whipping (knot work that stops a rope from unravelling). I have based my choices on what is required by each group of scouting and what I have found easier for them to remember. As I have said many times to Scouts, "a fancy or complicated knot is great but useless if you can't remember how to tie it".
