Extremism, Terrorism, and Misogyny in Canada A Brown Bag Lecture with Ashley Haller, BA, MHR Research Technician, Research and Education for Solutions to Violence and Abuse (RESOLVE), University of Manitoba 3:04 Start of Ashley Haller's presentation: • Extremism, Terrorism, and Misogyny in Cana... Two of the deadliest attacks ever perpetrated on Canadian soil have one thing in common: they were motivated by misogyny. Recently, Canadian feminists have called for these crimes to be recognized for their political and ideological nature: as gender-based extremism and terrorism. In her lecture, Ashley Haller explores the applicability of the labels extremism, violent extremism, and terrorism for misogynistic violence through the tragic events of the Montreal Massacre (1989) and Toronto van attack (2018) in Canada. She argues that these designations are not only applicable to misogynistic violence, but necessary in changing the way these acts are understood. This emerging framework more adequately addresses the gendered basis for these crimes while presenting the opportunity for more promising responses to these acts moving forward. Ashley Haller’s research paper is available in Perspectives on Justice, Indigeneity, Gender, and Security in Human Rights Research (Palgrave Macmillan Singapore, Reimer and Standish, editors, 2023).
