Hand-torquing reference for common automotive fasteners: ‘Gutentight’ 7-10 lb-ft. Used for standard-grade 6mm bolts ‘Fairly tight’ 10-20 lb-ft. Used for high-grade 6mm bolts, or standard-grade 8mm bolts ‘Darn tight’ 30 lb-ft. Used for 8-10mm bolts and stuff you probably don’t want to come loose ‘Pretty hard’ 40-50 lb-ft. Used for 10mm bolts and other stuff you’d really rather not come loose ‘Probably want a half-inch ratchet’ 80 lb-ft. Used for 12mm bolts or lugs on aluminum rims ‘Fine, I’ll use a half-inch ratchet’ 100 lb-ft. Used for 12mm bolts or lugs on steel rims ‘Use an impact, but on the lower settings’ 160-180 lb-ft. Used for 14-16mm bolts, and chrome bumpers on old trucks ‘Hard’ 200-300 lb-ft. This will destroy basically any common automotive fastener, except maybe the axle nuts/wheel hubs ‘Give'r’ 400 lb-ft.
