Osgood-Schlatter disease is a common overuse injury affecting the tibial tuberosity—the bony prominence just below the kneecap—most often seen in adolescents during periods of rapid growth. It occurs when repetitive strain from the quadriceps muscle, transmitted through the patellar tendon, pulls on the growth plate at the tibial tuberosity. This repeated traction can lead to inflammation, localized pain, and a noticeable bump below the knee. Osgood-Schlatter is especially common in young athletes involved in sports that require frequent running, jumping, or kneeling. In this video, I’ll walk you through key strategies to manage Osgood-Schlatter disease, including activity modification and therapeutic exercises. Reducing high-impact activities that aggravate the condition—like jumping and sprinting—is often necessary in the early stages to allow the irritated area to calm down. Rehabilitation focuses on restoring flexibility in the quadriceps and surrounding muscle groups, improving strength and control in the lower extremity, and gradually reintroducing sport-specific movements. These interventions help decrease tension on the tibial tuberosity, reduce pain, and promote tissue remodeling so young athletes can return to activity with improved mechanics and reduced risk of recurrence.
