They are typically found on turbofan engines, which are commonly used in modern jet aircraft. When an aircraft lands, it relies on the braking system to decelerate and come to a stop. However, the braking system alone may not provide sufficient stopping power, especially on larger or faster aircraft. This is where thrust reversers come into play. Thrust reversers work by redirecting the flow of engine exhaust gases forward, opposite to the normal direction of flight. By doing so, they create a reverse thrust force that acts against the aircraft's forward motion, effectively helping to slow it down. On private jets, thrust reversers are usually of the "target" type, which are simpler and lighter than the more complex "bucket" type used on larger commercial aircraft. The target-type reversers consist of two halves, which are attached to the rear portion of the engine nacelle (the protective housing surrounding the engine). These halves can move into the exhaust stream when deployed, redirecting the exhaust gases forward. To deploy the thrust reversers, the pilot typically engages a lever or a button in the cockpit after touchdown. The mechanism then activates, causing the two halves of the reverser to swing into the exhaust stream. The engines continue to produce thrust, but now it is directed forward, generating the reverse thrust that aids in slowing down the aircraft. It's important to note that thrust reversers are not meant to be used during normal flight operations. They are specifically designed for use during the landing rollout phase to enhance the aircraft's deceleration capabilities. Once the aircraft has slowed down to a certain speed, the pilot will deactivate the thrust reversers and rely solely on the wheel brakes to bring the aircraft to a complete stop. Thrust reversers are an important safety feature that enhances the landing performance of private jets and improves runway efficiency by reducing the distance required to stop after landing. They contribute to safer and more controlled landings, particularly in adverse weather conditions or on shorter runways.
