DRILL INSPECTION: The subject tree is a water oak located in Tallahassee just outside the property line and fence of my client's property. The tree is old and shows signs of it through a minor amount of twig and limb die back in the canopy. The cause for concern is the large tree's heavily leaning top over your new addition. The tree has a very apparent decay wound on the main trunk starting about 25' high and is visible up to about 35' high. The rest of the large leaning top is above that creating a lot of leverage on that weaker spot. I pulled a diameter measurement at the base of the wound of 22.25" and another diameter measurement at the top of 22.5" so we will call the trees diameter 22" at the point of decay. I drilled at the bottom of the wound, the center of the wound and again at the top revealing approximately 5"-6" of overall depth of decay. That is almost 1/3 compromised and I would not feel confident if my house were under this tree although it still could stand for years.
